Red Cross Files: 100 Days Offensive

The Allied Hundred Days Offensive is the term given to the final phase of the Great War commencing with the breakthrough on the Somme on the 8th August 1918, led by General Monash‘s Australian Corps at Villers-Bretonneux. Although the 22nd Battalion had just a supporting role on Ludendorff’s ‘Black Day’, the 22nd would play their part as the Corps advanced east, culminating in the attack on the Hindenburg Line at Beaurevoir on what would be the penultimate day of fighting by the AIF on the Western Front. During the offensive 75 men of the 22nd Battalion were killed in action or died of wounds from August up until the Armistice on 11th November 1918. In addition another twelve men would die from illness over the next two years, many from the influenza epidemic that that had a devastating impact on both the soldier and civilian populations at this time.
